Washington State governor cracking down on federal employees collusion with ICE
Although Washington State has vowed not to cooperate with ICE amidst the current crackdown against immigration, the Seattle Times discovered recently that the state’s Department of Licensing has been reporting undocumented individuals dozens of times per month.
Washington Governor Jay Inslee, a Democrat, stated that he was unaware of the extent of the cooperation and, through a spokesperson, stated that he ordered the DOL to cease the practice. Soon after Trump’s taking office last year, Inslee signed an executive order to ensure ICE “doesn’t utilize state employees as agents of the federal immigration services.” Earlier this month, the state’s attorney general also made headlines by suing the Motel 6 chain for its practice of providing information about undocumented immigrants to ICE.
The Department of Licensing is in charge of assigning driver’s licenses to Washington residents. According to the Seattle Times, they had reported 20 – 30 individuals to ICE since Trump’s taking office in January 2017.
